What Is Laser Tattoo Removal?
Laser tattoo removal is the process by which a powerful laser beam is focused on a tattoo to reduce or eliminate its appearance. It works by forcing the affected area to absorb light so quickly that a sound wave is formed, breaking the inks in the tattoo down to the point that the body’s lymphatic system can eliminate it. This photoacoustic effect minimizes the treatment’s impact on surrounding tissues.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
The number of treatments required varies. Factors such as the size of your tattoo, colour, quality and depth of ink, and location on the body all affect how effective laser tattoo removal will be for you. Your overall health also affects how quickly your lymphatic system works its magic. Around 3-4 treatments are usually necessary to fade a tattoo, while approximately 6-12 treatments are required for removal.
We will do our best to estimate the number of treatments needed to achieve the results you are looking for during your free consultation, but the speed at which your body eliminates the ink may differ from our initial estimation.
How Far Apart Should The Treatments Be?
You need to wait for your body to eliminate the ink particles and allow your skin to heal before undergoing your next treatment. We typically recommend appointments in six week intervals, but any specific patient may require more or less time between sessions.
How Long Does Each Laser Treatment Take?
We allocate 30 minutes to each appointment, but some treatments can be performed much faster than that. We can book a double appointment for patients having multiple tattoos removed, ensuring that you get all of the time you need. We can discuss how long your average treatment will be and how many sessions will be required during your initial consultation.
If you would like a topical anesthetic, it needs to be applied at least an hour before your scheduled treatment. This increases your average appointment time substantially. We offer Numb Skin by Dr Numb in our clinic and vouch for its effectiveness.
Does The Treatment Hurt?
Patients may experience discomfort during and following the treatment. Past clients describe the treatment as flicking a hot rubber band onto your skin. Afterwards the area will feel hot, like you got a sunburn. If you are uncomfortable with these sensations, ask to be provided with Numb Skin during your free consultation.
That said, we mitigate the discomfort you experience as much as we can. Our Koolio cooling system soothes the treated area before, during, and after your treatment. Cold compressing the affected area offers immediate relief in conjunction with the application of a soothing gel.
Is There Any Downtime?
Most patients can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment. However, you should avoid sun exposure and any strenuous physical activities that may affect the treated area.
We will discuss post-treatment care after every session at our clinic, so you will always know exactly what you are supposed to do. You will also be provided with an information sheet to ensure that you do not forget any important instructions.
What Areas Of The Body Are Suitable For Treatment?
Laser tattoo removal is an option for all body areas except those with a close proximity to your eyes, including the eye itself, eyelids, and waterlines directly beneath the eye.
